Does car insurance or a wheel protection plan cover curb rash?
Updated · By the SaveARim team. How we write guides
A scrape on a wheel can sit on four different papers: an auto policy, a tire and wheel plan, a vehicle warranty, and a lease wear guide. They do not say the same thing. This page is not legal advice and it is not insurance advice. Check your own policy. We haven't filed a claim, and we haven't fitted a protector.
What do collision and comprehensive cover?
Progressive, on a page updated August 15, 2023 and read October 26, 2026, says collision coverage should help pay for damage to the car if you hit a curb, regardless of fault. The Insurance Information Institute says collision pays for a collision with an object. That Institute page does not use the word curb. Comprehensive, on both pages, is for events other than a collision.
Progressive's curb page says a light bump, with little or no damage, is generally not an accident, and that you do not need to file a claim, including while parking. A hit that scratches or dents the car could be an accident. Extensive or severe damage means tell the insurer, and possibly the police. If the curb itself is damaged and you are found responsible, liability may pay for the curb and other property. Liability does not pay for your own wheel.
The Institute's pothole article, read the same day, says collision is optional. It covers a collision with an object, naming a pothole, a lamp post, and a guard rail, or flipping over, and it does not cover wear and tear from bad road conditions. The payout is the repair minus the deductible. Comprehensive on that page covers theft, vandalism, flooding, and fallen objects such as trees. A separate Institute article on the two coverages adds a telephone pole and a mailbox, and says collision also covers potholes. Every state except New Hampshire requires liability insurance. Collision and comprehensive stay optional. A lender may still require both if the car is financed.
How do you compare a deductible with a repair?
Progressive says collision may pay to repair or replace a scratched rim, and that it will not pay any of that damage if the repair costs less than the collision deductible. The Institute says wheel and tire damage from a pothole may fall below the deductible, so a claim may not be practical. Neither page prints a repair cost for curb rash.
When the deductible is less than the repair, Progressive describes filing as the usual step. This page does not print either figure. The deductible is on the declarations page of the policy you hold.
What does a tire and wheel plan cover?
The Lexus Financial Services Tire and Wheel Gold brochure, form dated August 2025 and read October 26, 2026, is an optional agreement. Structural coverage replaces a tire or a wheel for road-hazard damage such as a nail, glass, a pothole, rocks, or debris. Optional cosmetic coverage repairs nicks and scrapes, and it is limited to sanding, painting, or refinishing, up to six wheels in the term. Tesla's Wheel and Tire Protection Plan support page, read the same day, says that plan does not cover cosmetic damage.
The Lexus Gold brochure says the purchase is optional, cancelable, and not required to obtain credit. The brochure is general information. The service agreement controls, coverage may vary by state, and not every model is eligible. The obligor named on the form is Toyota Motor Insurance Services, Inc., with different obligors in some states. The form code is 24003D (08/25).
Cosmetic repair on that form does not add material and does not bend or straighten the wheel. A repair or a replacement without prior authorization is excluded, as are normal wear and tear, vandalism, road conditions in a construction site, and a tire with less than 3/32 of an inch of tread when the damage happens. The brochure states no deductible and no mileage limit. It does not use the words curb rash. A nick or a scrape is the phrase it uses.
Tesla's Wheel and Tire Protection Plan page describes a U.S. subscription for Tesla-installed tires and wheels, for typical road hazards such as potholes and debris, and for punctures. Tire repair is covered. A wheel is a replacement, not a repair, and a replacement appointment has a deductible. Theft, vandalism, and damage that predates the subscription are also outside that plan. The public page is general information, and the terms you received when you subscribed control that car. The page does not say a curb rash is a covered road hazard.
What does a lease wear guide count?
A lease wear guide is not an auto policy. On the BMW USA return page, read October 26, 2026, the tires-and-wheels list puts three items under no problem: the original size, speed rating, and run-flat specification; painted or chromed wheels free of scuffs and scratches; and minor curb rash. The needs-repair list includes mismatched, bent, or broken wheels, and painted or chromed wheels that are scuffed or scratched, plus bulges, cuts, gouges, or other tire damage that affects safe operation. The page prints both lists. It does not say which line controls when a mark is both minor curb rash and a scuff.
The same page says BMW Lease Protection can help with excess wear and tear fees, and that you confirm whether the car has it in MyBMW. That sentence does not list curb rash as a covered item. Toyota and Honda publish their own wear lists. Those lists, and the line that your own lease still controls, are in check for wheel damage before you return a leased car.
What does a vehicle warranty say about a curb?
Tesla's New Vehicle Limited Warranty for North America, effective September 1, 2026 and read October 26, 2026, does not cover damage from driving over a curb, a pothole, or another hazardous surface. It also excludes accidents, collisions, and objects striking the vehicle, and it excludes general appearance. Tires have their own warranties. That booklet is not an auto policy and not the wheel and tire plan.
Those limitations also name uneven, rough, or damaged surfaces, unfinished roads, debris, and other obstacles. They exclude paint and glass stone chips. Wheel alignment, cleaning, and polishing are maintenance. The booklet covers Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y.
A warranty on a rim protector is a different document again. AlloyGator and Rimblades warrant the accessory, not the car. Do rim protectors affect a warranty?
What should you record after a curb?
Progressive's curb page lists the notes to make. Look at every wheel and tire for scratches, dents, or chips. Check the front and the underside. See whether the car still steers straight. Take pictures in case you file a claim. If the car or the curb is more severely damaged, report it to the police and tell the insurer, even if you do not file. The page says state law may require a report. It does not name a state.
The Lexus brochure adds a gate the auto policy page does not. A repair or replacement without prior authorization is excluded from that plan. BMW's return page, for a charge from a third-party inspector, asks for an itemized receipt showing the repair was completed and paid. None of these steps is a claim we submitted.
Where does a rim protector fit?
A rim protector is a strip or a ring on the outer lip. It is not collision coverage, not a tire and wheel plan, and not a vehicle warranty. It does not change the deductible or a lease wear list.
A mark that is already on the metal is a refinishing job, which curb rash repair or rim protectors separates from a guard. Keeping the lip off the curb in the first place is in how to avoid curb rash when you park. What makers and owners have said about a guard after a hit is in do rim protectors work?
