Curb rash repair or rim protectors
Updated
A scrape on the outer lip and a crack in the wheel are not the same job. Refinishing paints over a mark that is already there. A rim protector is a strip or a ring you add so the next curb meets the guard first. We haven't had a wheel refinished, and we haven't fitted a protector.
What does refinishing involve?
WheelPrice, updated February 26, 2026 and read Oct 21, 2026, describes curb rash as scrapes and gouges on the outer lip or the face, usually from a parking spot. For that repair, they say the tire comes off.
A technician grinds and files the damaged area flat, fills it with epoxy filler or aluminum filler, sands in finer steps, then primes and paints to match the finish. On a spot repair, they blend the paint and add a clear coat. They separate that from a full refinish, which strips the wheel to bare metal and puts primer, color, and clear coat back on the whole wheel. They say a full refinish often takes 3 to 7 days per set.
Powder coating is a different process on the same page. The wheel is blasted clean, coated with a dry powder, and baked. They say most shops will not powder coat a cast aluminum wheel that is already cracked. After the work, they say the wheel should be rebalanced.
Their page lists $75 to $150 for a spot refinish on one wheel, $150 to $300 for a full refinish of one wheel, and $400 to $1,200 for a set of four. They say the range depends on wheel size, the finish, and how deep the damage is. Those figures are WheelPrice's. They are not a quote we requested, and they are not a price on Amazon.
A machined face, turned on a lathe, is harder to match than a plain painted wheel. A diamond-cut finish is that kind of face. A rim protector on a diamond-cut wheel is the note on lacquer and moisture in an existing mark.
When does the damage need a pro?
NHTSA's summer driving page, read Oct 21, 2026, says to inspect the tread and the sidewalls at least once a month, and before a long trip, for cuts, punctures, bulges, scrapes, cracks, or bumps. If you find tire damage, they say to take the vehicle to a tire professional.
The Tire Industry Association's replacement page says to replace a tire immediately if steel or fabric is exposed. They also say to have a professional inspect irregular tread wear, a bulge, or anything that looks out of place. Their wear bars sit at 2/32 of an inch. When the tread is even with those bars, they say the tire has to be replaced.
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association's Care and Service manual points readers to the Tire Industry Association's Passenger and Light Truck Tire Conditions Manual. It says a rim or wheel that is bent, dented, cracked, excessively corroded, or otherwise damaged should come out of service. Bridgestone's tire manual, in NHTSA's document library, says that if you have a bent or cracked wheel, it must be replaced.
What to look for on the tire right after a curb, including a bulge and a pressure check, is in check your tire and wheel after hitting a curb. A safety inspection looks for cracks and bends. It does not say a rim protector passes. Do rim protectors pass a vehicle inspection?.
Where do rim protectors fit?
AlloyGator, Rimblades, and All-Fit describe a guard on the lip. Their install pages cover a ring, a taped strip, or a length of trim. They do not describe grinding, filler, or paint.
Putting a protector on does not refinish metal that is already scraped. What those makers say the piece does, and what owners wrote after a hit, is in do rim protectors work?. If the car is going back on a lease, the wear lists from Toyota, Honda, and BMW are a separate document. Check for wheel damage before you return a leased car.
What did owners report after a curb?
On Tesla Motors Club, read Oct 21, 2026, spatterso911 wrote of one scrape and no rim damage, and that a repair would have cost more than the set of guards. artsci wrote that a hard curb tore part of a ring off, with less damage to the wheel than they expected without it.
cfOH wrote of zero damage on the wheel after brushing a parking-lot curb. Those are three owner reports from one thread. They are not a test we ran, and they do not say a cracked or bent wheel is safe to keep driving.
